Halloweeny books

In the spirit of halloween, I thought I would put together a small list of some halloween appropriate books. Also, this post was supposed to go up yesterday (on halloween), but it obviously didn't go to plan. But hey, better late than never right?

Last year I heard a bunch of people talking about Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix, so this year I just had to read it. This is a classic horror story, where some people decide to stay in a haunted house overnight, but instead of a haunted house the story is set in an IKEA knock-off store. Strange things are happening at night in the Orsk store, and when nothing shows up on the security cameras, three employees decide to stay the night to investigate. I really liked this story, and when reading it by myself at night, it was terrifying. The whole idea about the haunted department store was so unique - especially paired with amazing layout of the book. The book is made to look like an IKEA catalogue, complete with a product ordering form and product illustrations in the beginning of each chapter.

The next one is the graphic novel Through the Woods by Emily Carroll. This is a collection of five stories, all written by Emily Carroll, and illustrated by different artists. The drawings are beautiful, and when read in the right atmosphere, the stories can be really creepy.

The next one is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. This book is about Le Cirque des Reves, which is a traveling circus that only opens at night. I was a bit sceptical about this book to begin with, because all the summaries depict the book as a dramatic love story, which it really isn’t. I mean, there is a love story but it’s only a small part of the book.

The last one is the graphic novel version of Coraline by Neil Gaiman. I haven’t read the actual book yet, but I believe it’s a children's horror story. The story is about a young girl - Coraline - who moves into a new house with her parents. After walking through a secret door, she finds herself in a parallel world, that has everything; better toys, better food, and parents that have time to play with her. The only thing Other world doesn’t have, is another Coraline, and soon she discovers that the other parents want her to stay with them. Forever. This is a fun little story for kids and grownups who doesn't like stories that are too scary.

Which spooky books do you like to read for halloween?
