When the first volume of the new Ms. Marvel series was released last year, I knew I had to pick it up. I've read a couple of the old issues with Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel and I never really got into it, but I'm really enjoying this new more modern and diverse take on the superhero with a teenaged muslim character.
Kamala Khan is a Pakistani girl living in america. The first issue focus on the complications of being a part of two different cultures, and living with (at least from her perspective) very strict parents.
After a fight with her parents one night, she decides to sneak out to attend a party. As she is leaving the party to go home, a mysterious fog sweeps over the city and Captain Marvel appears along with Captain America and Iron Man. During this meeting, Kamala is mysteriously transformed into Ms. Marvel and the story kicks off from there. Now she has to manage school, her parents and being a superhero. Luckily she has the help of her best friend (and possible love interest?) Bruno.
I LOVE the concept of a teenage pakistani girl becoming a superhero (yay for diversity), and it’s done in such a great way - her culture and religion obviously affects the storyline, but it comes across as a natural part of the character, without it being her entire identity.
So far I’m really liking the storyline, and it moves along at a great pace. We are introduced to first overarching plot including the first main villain - Mr. Edison aka Chicken man.
I have always been a fan of superheros, and I just love how the superheros within each publishing universe interact. Marvel’s superheros are definitely my favourite, and I got so excited when some of them were featured in the very first story.
