September reads

Hi! Today I’m going to talk a bit about the books i read in september. I’m doing separate posts about all of these later on, so I won’t go too much into them.
I started this month out in a bit of a reading slump and I have had a bunch of reading to do for school, so I haven’t had time to do a lot of actual-novel-reading. I have however been reading a lot of graphic novels.

The first two are Saga volume 1 and 2. I picked up vol 1 on a trip to London back in July, after my friend Sisse had been raving about it. And it was amazing! It was actually so good, that I had to order the vol 2 right away, and vol 2 was equally amazing. The series is about two people from different planets, which has been in war for a long time. The two fall in love and have a baby. Neither of the two nations are especially happy about all of this, and the little family has to go on the run. If you are into exciting storylines, fun dialogue, beautiful drawing and regally weird characters, you should definitely pick this up.

I read the first volume in The Wicked + The Divine series last month, and when I went online to order a book for school vol 2 “accidentally” slipped into the basket too. The Wicked + The Divine is about twelve gods who are reborn into the world ever ninety years. They live as rock stars for two years, and then they die. The second volume was even better than the first one, and after reading the HUGE cliffhanger I was left completely mind-blown. I haven’t been able to find a release-date for vol 3 yet, but I’m already SO excited for it.

I also read vol 2 of Chew. Chew is a series about a guy named Tony Chew, who has this weird ability where he can chew on something, and immediately know everything that has happened to the thing. This ability gives him an advantage in his work as a cop, and later as an agent for the FDA. This series is ridiculously weird and sometimes a bit gory, but it is also really fun and interesting. This is my least favourite graphic novel of the month, but that is by no means a bad thing. I did really like the second volume, I just didn’t love it as much as the first one.

Shirley Jackson has been really hyped in the online book community in the last year or so - especially We Have Always Lived in the Castle - but I still hadn’t really gotten around to reading any of her stuff. As I was getting out of my reading slump, I really wanted a light read, and I decided to pick up The Lottery. The story takes place in a small town during an annual ritual, and that’s all I’m going to say about that. I loved it, and if you are into short stories, or stories with a dark twist, I’m sure you would too. It has definitely made me want to read more Shirley Jackson.

The only actual novel I managed to finish this month was The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. This one is a classic coming of age story in the same style as The Shock of the Fall and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The story is about a troubled teenager named Holden, and it describes the events of a weekend he spends in New York. I usually love books, where the narrator talks directly to the reader, and although I liked the book, I didn’t love it as much as I wanted to.

What have you been reading this month? xx - Lene
